the last presidential -- the first presidential debate. obama now at 45%, romney at 49%. that's a significant shift from before the debate when the president was ahead by eight points, 51% to 43%. but let's dig a little bit deeper right now. this question, all likely voters who were asked answered, obama doesn't know how to turn the economy around, do you agree or disagree? 54% said they agree with that. 44% they say disagree. that sounds like trouble for the president's reelection campaign. >> that does. that number -- first of all, the top-line numbers are surprising because i believe pew has been a pr pre-pro obama poll. pew's been pretty good for obama. the top-line numbers are really surprising. have to see if other polls show the same thing. but as you point out, that's the key number, the economy. how does obama get out of this box of voters being not happy with the economy? but up until now, willing to perhaps give him another chance. i'm surprised. i'm surprised the debate turned things around, if they indeed have, that quickly. obama has two more debates to turn thin

. romney accused obama of failing to lead in the middle east. is going to frame his positions ahead of the next presidential debate next week. we have some analysis from our russian and correspondents in just a moment, but first tier are a few clips. >> it is our responsibility and the responsibility of the president to use our greatest power to shape history, not lead from behind the. destiny at the mercy of events. i will put the leaders of iran on notice that the u.s. and our friends and allies will prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapon capability. i will not hesitate to impose sanctions on iran and will tighten the sanctions we currently have. >> max hoffman was in lexington for that speech. foreign policy was never at the heart of romney's message. he has always been about the economy. what did we learn about him here? are we looking at a new conservative republican? -- neo-conservative republican? >> they avoided the name "george w. bush" similar to ronald reagan's foreign-policy. they do not want to be in his corner. at the same time, they want to take advantage of the t

victory over the president in the first presidential debate. that changed the story of the whole campaign. if you have ryan defeating the vice president joe biden it would really create a story of obama-biden on the ropes. and, romney-ryan on the move. bill: the way mike murphy explains it, republican strategist on "meet the press" sunday morning, democrats could be desperate. do you agree with that? >> they're certainly very worried. the degree of concern they had over the president's performance in denver is much deeper than we even thought. they're very, very worried about that. they're looking for joe biden to come out and deliver a lot of zingers and attack lines that barack obama didn't. this is the second chance in the presidential debate. there is not another actual presidential debate until october 16th. bill: listen how paul ryan explains how he sees vice president joe biden. >> he is fast on the cuff. he is a witty guy. he knows who he is and been doing this for 40 years. so, you're not going to rattle joe biden. joe biden has been on the national stage. he ran for president tw

that drubbing that president obama took, and we've got the vice-presidential debate this week and maybe that was close are than the last two presidential debates and they're very important. >> as of now, dead heat. all across the country, the national average, dead heat. >> i like that, and by the way, we still ask scott rasmussen in about a half hour, how many people were polled after the jobs report. how big a factor is the jobs report in that time. >> and we got the twitter feed this morning, as a matter of fact, and he said this is three day tracking poll so those numbers are the latest since the debate. >> so they wouldn't include the jobs numbers? >> not the jobs numbers, but the debate performance. >> and definitely the debate. and we've got a surprise drop in the unemployment rate friday, mainly because of the household survey, that would be 60,000 people surveyed, and from that, miraculously, we found that 873,000 people had joined the work force. and at "varney & company" we want to focus on what we call the real unemployment rate, which is 14.7%, when you take into account th

. former presidential candidate newt gingrich and senior obama adviser david axelrod were asked if obama should have called out romney if he thought his opponent was being dishonest. >> the president of the united states had 90 minutes. now, if he had done his homework, if he had actually prepared, if he had actually studied romney, why didn't he say it? why didn't he take romney head on? first of all, the charge on the tax cuts is just plain wrong and i think virtually every analyst has said, and even your deputy campaign manager said the charge is wrong. but forgetting that for a second, the job of the president is supposed to be to be confident and to be able to stand up for what he believes in and to be able to articulate what's wrong. mitt romney walked over him. >> i will be honest with you, i think he was a little taken aback at the brazenness with which governor romney walked away from so many of the positions on which he's run, walked away from his record. and that's something we'll have to make an adjustment for. it takes a certain, as president clinton would say, it takes a ce

things come to fruition, i think he's going to win the presidential election, i'm pretty happy about it. >> governor rendell we noticed that president obama in the last debate did not look like he's prepared. i doubt we'll see the same performance the next time around. what do you think he needs to do? >> well i think he needs to be more aggressive. first of all he needs to be more passionate about his accomplishments and his accomplishments i think are fairly significant. he took over a country that was on the brink of financial collapse, saved the financial syst system, got the american automobile manufacturing system again, we've had half a million manufacturing jobs, best period of manufacturing growth in a while, housing starts are up, consumer confidence is up, automobile sales are up, rail traffic is up, the unemployment rate is under 8%, we're headed in the right direction and i think he's got to be pretty affirmative about that and i think he also has to call governor romney on the inconsistencies we saw in the first debate but i think jim is right, governor romney terrific per

that for us. >>> well tax reform is unwith with most devisive issues the presidential campaign with both president obama and gop nominee mitt romney sharing drastic revision tax code. the tax foundation examines romney's plan and how it could affect the economy and of course your tax bill. here is the president scott hodge. scott, give us the headline. is it good or bad for the economy. >> it is very good, tracy. when we analyze the plan using sort of a dynamic model, woe find out when you cut individual tax rates across the board and especially cut the corporate rate by 10%age points from 35 to 25% it has very strong economic effect on growth over the long-term. that translates into higher incomes for all americans. so as a result even when you offset some of the spending cuts with base broadening eliminating loopholes everyone ends up better off in the long run with higher incomes and basically higher standards of living. tracy: it is an important point to make he is lowering the rates by 20%, not to 20%. that is gets lost in the press along the way. >> yes it does. tracy: top rate 35%

the american people saw at that presidential debate last week. they saw mitt romney going toe to toe with president obama and so now is another chance they think for the american people to say mitt romney filling out the role as commander in chief and laying out his foreign policy principles and then after the speech is over he will be meeting in a round table with a group of retired generals. again, another one of those images that the campaign would like to put out there of mitt romney as commander in chief. just to talk a little about what you and wolf were talking about a few moments ago, you go into the excerpts and you can take away a few different things. i was listening to a call yesterday and you just mentioned the situation in syria and they were talking about this idea of providing arms to the rebels in syria as an idea that would appeal to the left as to people who look at this from a humanitarian standpoint, and so it was interesting to hear the romney campaign talk about that issue from this standpoint. the other thing they raised on this conference call and that you al

that it could still swing back after the next debate. we have the vice-presidential debate coming up on thursday but the bigger one will be following week at hofstra university when mitt romney and president obama go head-to-head again. that is different kind of format. the town hall format. president and mitt romney will talk to individual voters asking questions, that may be a better format for the president. jon: but it does seem that states like ohio and nevada are getting tighter, and you know, with, well the election is four weeks from tomorrow. if that momentum holds for the romney team, it could really be a surprising turn around come election day? >> it certainly could. of course the romney campaign and republican national committee did a big turnout drive this past weekend. they have been doing a lot of that. we've seen it, we've seen it more from democrats. they have been exposing some of their organizational advantages all summer long. we're just now seeing how much the romney campaign is doing in some of these states. you're right, it absolutely could turn around. until we see romne
